Bread Pakora is an ubiquitous typical Delhi snack rarely found elsewhere in the country.
The triangular deep fried Pakora made of 2 slices of bread with a sandwich of mashed masala potato stuffing is a delicacy the way it is prepared in Delhi. It is the most common and most popular snack available all over NCR and is multipurpose snack for breakfast, tea time , tiffin, a quickmeal with a cup of hot tea. Delhites just love the item .
I have very fond memories of the item. Good old mid sixties of my college going days, leaving home early morning without breakfast, most of us used to live on break pakora which was our breakfast. Almost in all the college and school canteens, bread pakora served with generous portion of so-called sauce( which was a kind of pumpkin & tamarind ketchup , disguised as tomato ketchup) or a green mint chutney is the hottest selling item even in modern times of westernized snack foods like burgers & pizzas.
Every tea joint, every halwai, every snack shop from a non-descript roadside dhaba to the upper class Nathu’s and Haldirams, all over Delhi region prepares & serves bread pakora . The taste and tang of roadside eateries cannot be matched by the Nathus and Haldirams.
Early seventies when I entered job, once again the morning snack was bread pakora for years . When I was posted out of Delhi , living all alone in Kota, scouring around the dhabas for snacks & eats, one thing which I missed most was Bread Pakora. Though Kota had its own famous Pyaz-kachori , but nothing could beat my favorite snack.Later days, once again living alone in Nagpur, I searched for Delhi type of bread pakora , which was nowhere available. I discovered Haldirams in the process which had only localized presence in Nagpur only those days.
Even now, when I am in my early sixties and not able to digest the street food , I still yearn for my favorite dish and manage to order the bread pakora whenever an opportunity is available, but that taste and quality of the bread pakoras of my school & college days seem elusive, lost forever.
